Vignettes from a strange December

As I watch joggers run by in short sleeves and the children ride past on their bikes it’s hard to reconcile these scenes with the fact it’s Christmas Eve here in Canada.

But my Mozambican family has their Christmas lights strung up so it must be true!

Romy sends his best although neither he, nor his friends, can understand why they’re sloshing through mud on misty mornings.

The geese continue to migrate although they seem in no rush and I’m sure some of them are contemplating a fowl coup against their leaders given how mild the ‘winter’ has been so far.

Ivy however is happy no matter what as she desires ‘thrown stones more than the bones of elephants’ to paraphrase poet Dylan Thomas.

Whatever you are celebrating I hope it brings you happiness and a little peace…if this keeps up the lawn will need cutting soon!

  1. Christmas is long gone, particularly the one you are referring to here. But I still enjoy your photos. Hopefully winter has been better this year. 🙂

  2. We’re having mild weather too. Roses blooming in January, swathes of daffodils blooming in London. It needs to get cold for a bit before spring arrives!
    Happy New Year!

The pictures are great. I especially liked the one with the holiday lights. We currently have snow on the ground, so it’s starting to seem like winter. Happy New Year!

  4. It was very mild in England over Christmas, and as you must have seen on the news, they’ve had lots of flooding in the northern parts. Love your photos, especially the one of dear Ivy. Happy New Year to you. 🙂

  5. We are having a wet and mild Christmas too! Thank-you for this lovely post of vignettes, Carol – I hope you have had a lovely Christmas and your New Year is a good one. Best wishes, Clare 🙂 x

So different this year from last in your part of Canada! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season none the less and wishing you every happiness in 2016!

I hope you had a wonderful, if unseasonal Christmas. We spent time flood-dodging, in that travel was difficult. But we weren’t among the unhappy numbers flooded out here in the UK. What strange weather.

I love the first photo of your Mozambican family!
I’m being completely selfish, but I love this version of winter 🙂 With any luck, I’ll be out on my bike at some point today 🙂
Best wishes Carol, and hope the rest of your holiday is very special!

    • I kind of like my Mozambican friends too – a country I have a soft spot for. Hope you made it out on your bike:-) My one granddaughter received a new bike for Christmas and was able to try it out straight away – how often does that happen in Canada?? Hope you holidays continued to be great too.

Hope you are enjoying your unseasonably warmer weather. It is strange as we are much cooler than normal. Thank you for friendship in 2015. I look forward to following your adventures in 2016. May the new year bring joy and happiness to you and your family.

I forgot to say that I love your Mozambican family! It made me smile because I thought you must have adopted one through the various charities till I saw the photo 🙂

I find it very hard to miss the cold, but I seem to be alone in that. 🙂 I do feel for your poor horse in all that mud, though! I was going to go to the Star Wars movie, but it’s a football afternoon on TV, so it looks like I’ll be jumping in puddles on my own 😦 Wishing you a happy and fulfilled 2016.

  12. Misty morning and horse, lovely photo. It is a nice time of day and the photo shows its beauty.
Chicken coop, pigeons coo and now you say geese plan a coup, I can not cope. 🙂
Enjoy the Christmas and all the best for the year ahead. _/\_

  13. Even in Sudbury, which I consider the FAR NORTH it’s sunny and plus 2. The snow shoes we placed under the tree for Mike and Krista unfortunately won’t be appreciated in the near future!.

  14. Beautiful post! The pics are so special! Merry Christmas and happy holidays

  15. We are also having an unseasonably warm Christmas. James has sworn to grill steaks for Christmas dinner (and I think he means it)! 🙂 We wish you a wonderful holiday and New Year. All the best, Terri

Beautiful photos as always. I especially liked the ones of Romy and Ivy.

  17. GP Cox says:

Have a very Merry Christmas, from hot & humid Florida…

  18. agnesashe says:

Warm and very wet here too, but mercifully no significant flooding in East Anglia – keeping fingers crossed. Merry Christmas to you and your family and the stately Romy and the lovely, lovely Ivy.

A merry Christmas and an enjoyable 2016 of blogging. Beautiful images here in this page, and no snow? Today its 36 o C outside so the air conditioner is on 22 o C

  20. Gallivanta says:

Wishing you a Happy Christmas. We are having a lovely warm one, exactly as it should be for us. 🙂

  21. pommepal says:

What strange weather all around the world these days. It’s like waiting for the other shoe to drop. Enjoy it while it lasts. Lovely photos of your beautiful animals. Hope your Christmas is a relaxing one and best wishes for 2016

  22. Sounds like a warmer than usual Christmas all round (37C for us today). Happy Christmas!

  23. Gunta says:

A strange december indeed! We’re well on our way to record breaking rainfall here on the Pacific coast. All we can do is snuggle in, keep warm and enjoy the season whatever it throws at us!

    Wishing you happy holidays!

  24. Ingrid says:

I’m sure it’s just a matter of time for your Canadian winter to show up. In the meantime enjoy the fair weather and have a very Merry Christmas.

  25. Nancy says:

Merry Christmas! And I wish for you a Happy New Year!

  26. Lynn says:

    Merry Christmas!

  27. Lavinia Ross says:

Love the photos! Romy and Ivy are handsome as always.

The snow level report here is hanging around 1000 feet today, possibly dropping to 500 feet tonight. It is possible we will wake up to snow tomorrow. Weather is cool and wet this December for the most part. Daffodils are up a couple of inches though!
